Endodontic Retreatment

Even after undergoing endodontic treatment, a tooth can sometimes encounter new challenges months or years down the line, failing to heal properly or persistently causing discomfort. In such instances, a second endodontic procedure offers a renewed opportunity to save the tooth and restore its health.

Endodontic Retreatment: Second Chances for Your Tooth

Occasionally a tooth that was treated months or years ago may develop new problems. In some cases a tooth that has received endodontic treatment fails to heal or continues to have pain. You may have another chance to save the tooth with a second endodontic procedure.

Why Might Retreatment Be Necessary?

Several factors can contribute to the need for endodontic retreatment. These include:

  • Untreated Canal Anatomy: Complex root canal systems may contain unusual curves or blockages that were not fully addressed during the initial treatment. Utilizing advanced imaging, we can accurately identify all canals.
  • Fractured Tooth: A hidden fracture can allow bacteria to re-enter the tooth.
  • New Decay: The development of new decay under a filling or crown can compromise the root canal filling.
  • Loose or Broken Seal: Over time, the sealing material can degrade, allowing bacteria to penetrate the tooth.
  • Crown or Restoration Issues: A compromised or poorly fitting crown can lead to leakage and reinfection.

What Does Endodontic Retreatment Involve?

Retreatment is a specialized procedure. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Comprehensive Evaluation: We begin with a thorough examination to accurately assess the tooth and identify the source of the problem.
  • Access & Canal Evaluation: We carefully access the tooth and evaluate the root canal system to understand its anatomy.
  • Removal of Existing Material: The existing gutta-percha (filling material) and sealer are carefully removed from the root canals.
  • Canal Cleaning and Shaping: Using advanced rotary instruments and irrigation solutions, we thoroughly clean, shape, and disinfect the root canals to remove bacteria and debris.
  • Canal Filling: The canals are then filled with biocompatible gutta-percha and sealed with a permanent sealer.
  • Restoration: Often, a new crown is recommended to restore the tooth's strength, function, and aesthetics.
If you're experiencing pain or discomfort in a tooth that has already undergone root canal treatment, contact us today to schedule a consultation. We’ll assess your situation and determine if endodontic retreatment is the right solution for you.
